Ongoing Opportunities:

Fitness Council of Jackson’s Walking School Bus program: Calling all college students, adults, or seniors interested in leading a "Walking School Bus"! Walking School Buses will run each school morning from in the spring and fall. Students who live close to school meet at a set time and location and walk with the adult volunteer leader to school on the "walking school bus". It is a fun and safe way to get to school and the kids (and the leaders too!) get a little extra physical activity. Commitment is about 30 minutes each day that you are a leader and volunteers are usually finished by 8:45am. Contact Kristin Hendricks at 517-990-9798 or kristin@fitnesscouncil.org.

Hospice of Jackson and Oaklawn- One Jackson Square - Volunteers needed for: friendly visitors for patients, support group facilitators, massage therapists, deliveries, office work, fund raising and event workers. RSVP (Retired & Senior Volunteer Program)- 407 S. Mechanic St.- Three opportunities: 1. Volunteers 55 and older who can volunteer 1-20 hours per week for nonprofits in Jackson County 2. Volunteer drivers for seniors over 60 and veterans to medical appointments, grocery shopping and prescription pickup 3. Assist seniors with a friendly visit or call on a monthly basis.  Please call Pam Gage at 517-782-4616.

American Red Cross- 729 W Michigan Ave. - Looking for a volunteer to head up their director of volunteers position.  requirements: Minimum of 20 hours a week, computer knowledge, great phone personality, enjoys working in a fast pace environment.  Training available.  Please contact Cathy Lopez for more information at 517-782-9486 or clopez@redcross-scmichigan.org  

Jackson District Library- 244 W. Michigan Ave. The Jackson District Library is looking for volunteers to participate in an outreach program reading books to children in Day Cares and Preschools once a month.  Please contact the Carnegie Branch Children’s Department if you are interested at 517-788-4087 ext: 235.

Jackson County Medical Care Facility-524 Lansing Ave. – Volunteers are needed to assist with residents’ activities such as; bingo, community outings, friendly visits, special events, reading to residents & sharing your hobby or musical talents.  Call Brenda McKenna at 517-782-2079.

Foote Health System-205 N. East Ave. – Volunteers are needed to help as greeters, courtesy drivers, gift cart, friendly visitors and Reach Out & Read readers.  For more information, contact Nancy at 517-788-4733 or 517-788-4840.

Big Brothers Big Sisters-729 W. Michigan Ave.- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jackson County are recruiting volunteer mentors for the Project COPE (Children of Promise Excel) program.  Volunteer mentors will provide several hours a month of one-to-one time with children who have an incarcerated parent.  Please call Gloria Galbreath at 517-784-7181.

disAbility Connections- 409 Linden Ave. – Volunteers are needed to assist clients with equipment rentals, work with staff to help with quarterly mailings, computer entry and other minor clerical tasks.   Assistance with the Helping Friends Together Club is also needed.  Please call Dodi Botsford at 517-782-6054.

Jackson Youth Partnership- 1715 Lansing Ave.- Community coalition is looking for parent and youth involvement.  Contact Janelle Brown Buchler at 517-768-1637.

Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect- 606 Greenwood Place- Volunteers are sought to assist with child care during parenting classes and to assist the facilitator with the course participants.  Opportunities to volunteer also exist for light cleaning and various clerical tasks as well as general maintenance and help with special projects.  For more information contact Sarah Weber at 517-788-4239.

4-H Sitting Tall Proud -Jackson County MSU Extension-1715 Lansing Ave. - Volunteers are needed to be side walkers for individuals with disabilities to keep riders steady and safe.  Must be 16 years old or older.  For more information contact Kay O’Daniel at 269-979-2250. 

Florence Crittenton Services-1603 Lansing Ave.- Mentors are needed to establish a one-on-one mentoring relationship and to be a positive role model for young men and women.  Contact Tammy Ratz at 517-787-3500 ext: 24.

Respite Care -Catholic Charities of Jackson-407 S. Mechanic- In home respite program is in need of volunteers to visit with the homebound adult family member while the caregiver enjoys some free time to run errands, keep appointments, or just relax.  For information, call 517-782-3878. 

Special Olympics of Michigan-Area 19- Volunteers are needed to help with various opportunities including; renovation projects, general office support and coaching.  For more information contact Sherry Bissell at 517-563-8279. 

Jackson Society for St. Vincent De Paul-1812 Spring Arbor Rd-Needs volunteers to assist with sorting and displaying donated items in store.  Open Monday-Friday 9:00AM-6:00PM, Saturday 9:00 AM-3:00 PM. For more information contact David Kemler at 784-0721.

Odd Fellow and Rebekah Home-2388 W. Michigan Ave. - Volunteers are needed to assist with resident activities. Activity department open until 8:30 PM Monday-Friday and until 6:00 PM in weekend.  Call Lori Lowder at 517-787-5140 for more information. 

Jackson School of the Arts-814 Winifred, Suite 12- Volunteers are needed to assist with special events, cleaning & organizing, and new members for the Board of Directors.  Call Kim Hastings at 784-2389.

Recycling Jackson- Volunteers are always needed at the Recycling Drop off Site located off of Brown St., behind the Home Depot.  Volunteers will assist patrons with dropping off and sorting recycling items.  The drop off site is open every Saturday except on holiday weekend from 9:00 AM-1:00 PM.  Volunteers can just show up. 

Greater Jackson Habitat for Humanity-1207 Pringle St. - Volunteers are needed to help operate, clean and price inventory for the re-store.  Volunteers will assist with data entries, pick up donated items and receive and sort items at the store. Training will be provided.  In addition to the store, volunteers are needed to assist with building projects such as houses and sheds.  Contact Cindy Barnes at 517-784-6620 for more information. 

Jackson Friendly Home-435 W. North St. – Volunteers are needed to assist with activities for the residents.  Contact Donna Luckadoo for more information at 517-784-1377. 

Jackson Interfaith Shelter-414 S. Blackstone St. - Volunteers are needed to help serve meals and assist with other tasks around the shelter.  Call 517-789-8735 for more information.

Junior Achievement of the Michigan Edge- Classroom volunteer/consultants are needed in Jackson, Lenawee and Hillsdale Counties.  Training is provided as well as lesson plans and all necessary classroom materials.  Contact Rachel Miller at 517-782-8221 ext: 12 for more information. 

Jackson County Department on Aging- 1715 Lansing Ave-Volunteers are needed to assist with the following: special events, wellness, health promotion, Senior Center Site activities, nutrition assistance, chore program, transportation, health insurance advocate, clerical, receptionist, and intergenerational activities.  Contact Jerry Sine at 768-2074 for these and other opportunities. 

Catholic Charities of Jackson-801 S. Mechanic- Volunteers are needed to assist with an after school program coordinated at the United Center for Caring.  For more information call 782 -2551.
